RJ an Obama look alike? I think not…

Monday, June 15th, 2009
Last week Friday, my girlfriend and I went to see Ghosts of Girlfriend’s past. It was a, whatever movie, it was funny and not a piece of crap but nothing worth blogging about. And I definitely don’t recommend going out of your way to see it. But on the way to the theater something interesting happened. We live within walking distance of the movie theater. As we were walking there, I noticed a man who was walking and eating something. He suddenly stopped, his eyes went wide, and he said or actually he yelled “You look-a like-a Obama!” and then he said something else loudly and incomprehensibly as we walked by.
This was so hilarious that I couldn’t really be mad but I think if it wasn’t so amazingly hilarious I would have had mixed feelings about it. For that one person reading this that does not know me, I look nothing like President Obama. I am much shorter than him, much darker than him, I had hair longer than his (I recently shaved my head), I wear glasses, I am not as super skinny as him, and I never ever wear a suit. That man saying I look like Obama was kind of like saying that all black people look alike, which is an annoyance. I don’t go up to all the Chinese girls here and say they look like Lucy Liu. But on the other hand, at least instead of being mistaken for a rapist that I look nothing like (which has happened, ridiculous! I know! This happened in the US by the way) I am being likened to the President of the United States.
Whether or not Barack Obama is a good President or not still remains to be seen but for someone to compare my appearance to that of the President of the US, no matter how unfounded is somewhat of a big deal and shows the significance of Barack Obama’s election to people around the world. Now instead of comparing African American people to whatever basketball player that they may know about, or whichever actor, or even whatever criminal, the first thing that comes to people’s minds outside of the US is president of the United States. Whether or not Barack Obama is a great president or an average one, he will, for sure, pop into people’s minds before any random American actor or criminal.
Oh, and in other interesting news there is no Chinese character or word for homosexual. Who knew! When Matthew McConaughey called someone a fag during the movie (derogatory I know sorry!) the subtitles went like this “Chinese Chinese Chinese  GAY  Chinese Chinese Chinese” haha who knew?!? No word for gay.
Peace out Ya’ll I am off to sleep.

RJ says “You’re in trouble now!” to the Tobacco Industry

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

Now I am not one of those people that subscribes to the belief that President Obama is the second coming, or that he is the best thing since sliced bread. Although I did vote for him, it was mainly because looking at the alternatives I thought it would be morally irreprehensible if I voted in any other way. But anyways that is neither here nor there.

All of my experience of the world outside of my bubble in the United States has been in Taiwan and Japan (England doesn’t count, I was only like 9 years old). From these two countries I have learned that we, in the US (the places I have been at least), are probably the most hardcore about limiting the sale of Tobacco and just making things difficult for the Tobacco industry in general.

Did you know that in Japan people can still smoke inside of restaurants? it is so dumb. The restaurants there have smoking and non smoking sections but there is no division between the sections. there might be a partial wall or something stupid, but nothing that keeps the smell or the toxic fumes from going into the smoking section. Here in Taipei there is no smoking allowed in public locations but there are WAY WAY WAY more smokers here than in the US.

But just because we are ahead of the game doesn’t mean that we should be dilly dallying. Oh Jeebus I just took a bite of this dessert that my girlfriend bought and it is what I would imagine a cheesy  cardboard turd would taste like. If you have American taste buds do not buy Taiwanese desserts they have way less sugar than their US counterparts.  ugh that was bad. Anyways where was I? oh yes dilly dallying! I think that some federal legislation is overdue and it has been for a while. But I just read that there has been some legislation in congress… uuuugggh my girlfriend bought more than one type and I just tried the second one oh jeebus this one is worse!… Oh yes there was legislation in congress that has been passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate that will add some hurt to the world of tobacco companies. The best part is that President Obama has promised to sign it! Last year President Bush (ugh it hurts to type that) threatened to veto it.

The most important part of this bill is that the FDA will now be able to regulate what goes into cigarettes. Although they will not be able to totally ban nicotine ( the substance that makes cigarettes so addictive) they will be able to get rid of many other carcinogenic chemicals used in cigarettes. If you want more information on the bill you can get it here. The fact the Obama has promised to sign this makes me feel even better about my choice to vote for him.

Yes! finally something good out of congress. This is a step in the right direction, now only if they could do something about this healthcare nightmare in the US. I don’t know what I am going to do when I am in business school next year. Personally I want a national healthcare system like many of the countries in Europe and Canada. Jeez, if Canada can do it why can’t we? Who cares if crazy rich republicans say it is socialist. If socialism will give me good healthcare that won’t put me into bankruptcy then I am all for it!

More power to the people and not the healthcare corporations! Peace out ya’ll! I’m out, I’m out, I’m out, I’m out, I’m out, I’m OUT!

RJ’s Endeavor to Learn Chinese

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Today was the second day of my mandarin class. It was an interesting day to say the least. So I walk into this large class that I have to do for supplementary education. Supplementary hours are required to bring my in class time up to 15 hours a week. But anyways, as I walk in I see something amazing, another black guy! He looked at me, nodded his head, I nodded back, then he said nĭ hòa (Hello in mandarin), so of course I said it back. After I sat down he turned around and said “are the tones giving you trouble?” and I said “Yes” and that started off a very interesting conversation.  The guy’s name is Okendo Lewis-Gayle. He is the President of the Harambe Endeavor. The goal of this organization is to create an initiative similar to the Marshall Plan but geared towards Africa. The cornerstone of his plan is to use the intellectual capital of all the African’s who leave Africa by giving them ways to give back to their home countries. After looking over their website and seeing pictures of Ken with President Obama and Mo Ibrahim I think his plan just might have what is needed to become a reality. I am very interested in his ideas and plans so I am going to try to meet with him and discuss things with him further. Or maybe I will just talk with him at the next Mandarin Phonetics class.

Oh, for those of you that do not know the Marshall Plan was an agreement between the United States and all other countries of Europe that were basically destroyed by Germany during the second world war, except for Russia of course. This agreement allowed the European countries to borrow large sums of money from the USA in order to rebuild their countries. The United States profited from this agreement and so did the Europeans. I am not sure how this can be crafted to fit the countries of Africa since for most of history they have been exploited by western powers for their resources, but I am interested to find out. Africa is a beautiful continent and I hate seeing being destroyed by oil companies creating natural gas flares, terrorism, rampant spread of HIV and AIDS, continual political struggles that destroy the lives of so many of their citizens, etc, etc, etc.

Anyways back to lighter subjects! After the phonetics class I went to my Beginners Chinese class. We continued practicing the buh puh muh fuh alphabet and practicing pronunciation. Buh Puh Muh Fuh is the pronunciation of the first group of the Chinese alphabet and also the name of the alphabet. During today’s break I got a chance to find out where everyone in my class was from.  Four are Japanese (Rìbĕnrén), one is Korean (Hánguórén), one is Panamanian (bānámăren), and the last is yours truly (Mĕiguórén). I am the only person in the class who is a native English speaker. I am very embarrassed to say that everyone in the class knows English very well except for one of the native Japanese speakers. I really feel left behind due to the fact that I am the only person in the room that is not already at least bi-lingual. But hopefully that situation will be rectified in the near future(and by near future I mean by 2011).

Finally after classs today I was able to stretch my legs and go for a short run on the track. Oh boy it was HOT! And Jesus it was fun fun fun. I can’t believe I went so long with out it. It’s like coming back to a long lost friend and picking up right where you left off. It was tiring but it felt good, I am glad that I get to use the Nation Taiwan Normal Universities track. I am also glad that it was not raining. Jesus yesterday it was raining like crazy. I might have actually seen a cat and a dog falling from the sky. And when I say it rained yesterday I mean the noise of the rain woke me up and it was pouring until after I went to sleep. The rain can be intense here.

Oh one travelling tip before I go! If you are coming to Taiwan you CANNOT bring a rain coat. When it rains here it is still friggin 85 degrees or hotter. When I got to class yesterday I was sweating bullets because I wore a raincoat. So don’t be like me, get an umbrella.

Peace out ya’ll, I’ll catch you on the flip side! (whatever that means)
