Got My Netbook! oh yeah! Asus 1005HA

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

So I just got my Asus 1005HA that I spoke about in my last post. So far I really like it. It is a bit slow but for 269.99 I can’t expect much. So here is what I did as soon as I got it.

So first I pulled it out of the box and then before even turning it on I installed a 2 gig stick of 800 Mhz ddr2, which of course required me to get rid of the 1 gig stick that was in there. Then I proceeded to turn on the machine and ….. nothing. Powered up and just had some LED’s light up but nothing on the screen. Uh Oh did I get a dud? No!

It looked as though the ram was in properly but it was actually not seated correctly. So I uninstalled and reinstalled the ram for s***s and giggles and I got the Eee PC splash screen. Yay! right? No!

When you first turn on the machine it requires that you leave the original 1 gig stick of ram in there for the initial setup. With the new 2 gig stick I got some sort of checksum fail error. Gah! so I was like wtf is this? once again for s***s and giggles I just said maybe it’s the ram! So I put the 1 gig stick back in and I got to go through the initial setup process which took about 30 minutes. This really sucked because I just wanted to do a fresh install of Windows 7 ultimate on it anyways but I had to go through this setup junk.

So finally the setup process was done so I turned off the netbook and once again installed the 2 gigs ram. This time it worked but when I got back into Windows 7 starter it still said 1 gig of ram. After verifying that Win 7 starter could register 2 gigs of ram I restarted it and it showed 2 gigs.

Now, secure in the knowledge that everything was working properly I installed Windows 7 Ultimate on this thing. It took literally 1.5 hours, which is new for me because as is my usual method I i nstalled it from a hard drive which is usually much faster. But this is a 269 dollar PC so the slowness is to be expected.

After the install I connected my external DVD-RW to the computer and opened up the Asus software disk. Asus has these instALL utilities (get it? install all, instALL lol), one installed all the drivers and the other installed all the utilities. it was a quick 10 minutes process. Other than win 7 ultimate having Aero enabled you can’t tell the difference.

I must say that after getting through this somewhat annoying setup process, this is an amazing little machine. It is actually pretty speedy for what I want to do. I don’t really watch much HD content so that is not a big deal at all. The only little issue that I have is that Hulu is a bit iffy. If I even move the mouse while watching a video on there, it starts to skip and junk. But I am going to Asia soon, Hulu does not work over there. But I will say this, Netflix works wonderfully even in full screen. Perhaps Mr. Jobs was right, Hulu uses flash and it skips on this notebook, but Netflix which forces you to download Microsoft’s Silverlight works like a charm, no skipping no nothing.

Whatever, screw that, even if it skips I still want flash on my Nexus One. I like having the option.

But anyways as far as using windows 7 features like search, Aer0 and browsing this machine is great! And it is last years model haha. Perhaps I will test some HD video on it and update this post, we shall see. I am in the process of copying 750 gigs of content over to my portable 1 tb drive so I don’t want to try pulling HD content off of my desktop right now.

oh I almost forgot, the keyboard on this thing is not all that bad. Lenovo’s offerings, the s10-3 and the 100XE, seem to have much better keyboards. But after about 30 minutes of use I am already successfully touch typing on this 1005HA in the dark as I type this post. So it is actually a pretty good keyboard for a netbook. Oh, and I am SO happy about this button in the upper left that turns off the touchpad. REALLY useful while typing for long periods of time. I think the newer models have an expressgate button in its place but you can still turn off the touchpad by pressing FN and one of the function keys at the top of the keyboard.

so for now, peace out. And if you are looking into a netbook right now look at the Asus 1005HA-PU17-BK it is last year’s top of the line Eee PC netbook and Newegg has it for 279.99 right now. Who knows how long that deal will last! Tigerdirect’s deal is already gone!

Windows Vista SP2 Reprise

Monday, June 15th, 2009

So, as you may remember, a week or two ago I installed Windows Vista SP2 on my Lenovo X61 Tablet. I noted how suddenly the amount of free hard drive space I had jumped from 80 something gigabytes to 99 gigabytes. I thought this was odd and looked up the reasons for it. But over these past weeks my hard drive space has been fluctuating. It went from 99 gigs free to 94 gigs free and kept fluctuating up and down (but more downward fluctuation than upwards) so that now I have 83 gigs free.

I have an external drive for large files so I don’t really have much on my laptop’s internal hard drive. I have maybe copied over about 1 gigabyte of pictures, that I share with my girlfriend, but this does not account for my free space dropping by 16 gigabytes. I hope that this is not a “feature” of SP2 because random fluctuations of 16 gigs on my hard drive are not things that I want happening on my computer. hopefully I am going insane and this is all a big mistake on my part. But if not oh shizzzz.

*EDIT* 7:00PM GMT + 8

About 2 hours ago I ran compcln.exe, a utility that comes with Windows Vista Service Pack 2. What I got was the free space on my hard drive went from 83.4 gigabytes up to 85.6 gigabytes. Then I went and took a 2 hour nap and once again the amount of free space I have has gone down to 81.9 Gigabytes. I am starting to wonder if this has something to do with System Restore space.  eh I dunno I am so confused. I have to do some Google digging on this issue. I never noticed this happening prior to Vista SP2. Gah, it seems that Microsoft may have done something weird again.

*EDIT* 1:17AM GMT + 8

And now my space is up to 83.2 Gigabytes from 81.9 and I have done nothing at all, except watch a bad japanese movie, called Death Note. Maybe a few temp files commited suicide because it was so painful. It was a really sad endings. One of those everybody dies endings. Eh whatever, can someone please tell me why my hard drive space is randomly changing?

Peace out ya’ll!

zip it up and zip it out!

RJ on Windows Vista SP2

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

Two days ago I did the unthinkable. I installed Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista, and it had been out for less than a week. I have a Lenovo X61 Tablet the specs on my machine are as follows:

Core 2 Duo 1.6ghz L7500
4.0 GB Ram
160 GB Hard Drive
Intel X3100 Video
Bluetooth
Blah blah blah

First off the installation went flawlessly. Second, it shows the true mark of a successful update, I noticed nothing, at first. I had started the installer, checked the box to restart automatically and then went off to my Chinese (Mandarin) class. After going to a night market I went straight home (I actually bought some blank DVD’s in case I needed to do a re-install haha). When I got home my computer was waiting for me to put in my password. So I did, and then left and came back.

Since my computer has one of the low voltage power saving CPU’s it is kind of sluggish at startup. Usually it takes a good 3 minutes before the desktop is available in any useable way with vista. Now with SP2 it takes about half of that time. That is a huge positive change in performance. Also I have more hard drive space after installing SP2. I don’t know the exact change because I was not expecting this to happen. But I think SP2 somehow freed up about 10 gigs of space on my computer. After browsing around the interwebs I found the reason.” Vista SP2 includes a command-line cleanup tool (compcln.exe) you can run to remove older system files and restore points, thus freeing up hard disk space.” That is pulled directly from this article. It seems that SP2 automatically runs this utility during install and frees up loads of space! Who knew! But Microsoft has not yet made a statement about these increases in free hard drive space so we shall see. Hopefully I didn’t lose anything important!

Supposedly there are some other improvements that I have not experienced. First, now Windows Vista supports burning Blue Ray discs. So now you don’t have to use that stupid 3rd party software haha. Hmm I think I will stick with Nero when I want to burn something. And second, it supposedly fixes that annoying problem of being disconnected from wireless networks when you come back from sleep. I never use sleep, and I am not interested enough to test it, but if that is true then that’s just wonderful

That’s all dudes and dudettes. I’m out!

Fine print below!

This post only contains my personal experience with Windows Vista SP2 I take no responsibility if you install it and your computer explodes or breaks in any way shape or form. Thank you.
