Finally Good Sushi in Seattle (Kisaku)

Salmon Sashimi on Rice

The picture above is the main dish that I ordered at Kisaku yesterday. It was sooooo good! This is actually an off-menu item composed of two orders of Salmon Sashimi on top of Sushi rice. The Sushi Rice is, unfortunately, hidden under sashimi. So this is sort of a Chirashi Bowl comprised 100% of Salmon.

I am a Salmon Sushi Connoisseur of sorts. I am SUPER picky when it comes to my raw Salmon. There are many restaurants with edible Salmon but few that I consider to be actually good. Here is a list of the Sushi Places that I have tried that have very good Salmon in my opinion:

  • Toro’s Japanese Fusion Seafood
Their Sake (Salmon) and Sake Toro nigiri are to AMAZING (Alhambra, CA)
  • J Sushi
Their Salmon is on the Low end of good but still good (Seattle, WA)
  • Doraya
Another place with a killer Salmon Sashimi bowl absolutely Amazing. This place has a nigir called seared Salmon Toro, oh my lord, it is positively orgasmic! (Causeway Bay, Hong Kong)
  • Sushi one
Another Hong Kong place with great Salmon and also seared Salmon Toro. (Causeway Bay, Hong Kong)

The last two have all kinds of good Sushi but it was a salmon list so there you have it. If you are ever in Hong Kong You should really try Doraya and Sushi One. They both have multiple locations but I was living in Causeway bay so there you have it. But I digress, onwards with Kisaku!

This following picture was some other kind of Salmon called Copper River King Salmon. It was good but I think I like the normal salmon better.

The Copper River King Salmon just didn’t have the same great flavor as the salmon in the salmon Chirashi Bowl. But it was still VERY good.

The following picture is from Crystal’s plate of sushi. I suspect those of you that know me can already guess which one I stole from Crystal. I will tell you after the picture so you can guess haha.

I tried the nice and fatty looking one in the second row on the right. It was Otoro, also known as VERY Fatty Tuna. It was exquisite ($10 dollar word) and the order only cost $9!! That would have been like 18 dollars at Toros in Alhambra but what can you do.

Finally it was time for Desert. Normally I don’t eat dessert but as crystal was reading the dessert menu I heard “Fuji Apple Cheesecake.”

She had me at Cheesecake! It is a well known fact among my friends that I have an unhealthy infatuation with cheesecake. But it is a lesser known fact that I LOVE Fuji apples. The Cheesecake was definitely very good. Although the best Cheesecake I have ever had was in Hong Kong at the Intercontinental. But whatever who knows if I will ever be able to afford to go there again haha.

So to sum up. If you have not eaten at Kisaku and you are a Sushi lover in Seattle, you should eat there!

If you are a visiting Sushi lover you should eat at Kisaku!

If you, like me, were told that Shiro’s and Maneki’s are the best sushi in Seattle, and then tried them and felt crushed by their utter lack of magnificence, You should eat at Kisaku!

So really, everyone who eats sushi should eat at Kisaku!

But I must say that I only really eat sashimi and Nigiri so if you are a roll person then I don’t know if these statements will apply.

Peace out.

The Burger Room

Friday, November 26th, 2010

Today we went for a long walk up a mountain today. I wanted to check out a trail at the Tai Tam Country Park. I figured this long sojourn up the side of a mountain (2.5 miles to the trail and then back), warranted a slight indulgence.

We had read on the internet about a place called the Burger Room right near where we live in Causeway Bay. Since we wanted to reward ourselves for a long walk we felt that cheeseburgers and French Fries were the way to go.

When we got to the Burger Room we were in time to get their Tea Set. Restaurants having “Tea Sets” is quite common in Hong Kong. Basically you can get a tea set when you come into the restaurant in between the lunch and dinner hours. Burger Room’s tea set is available between 2:30pm and 6:00pm.

For 38 HKD + 8 HKD for cheese (~6 dollars) we got the meal pictured below (we ordered two of these).

This is their mini burger. The mini burger is about 1.5 times as filling as a whopper from Burger King. Their normal burgers are gargantuan behemoths of heart attack inducing meat and oils, so its good we got a chance to get the tea set. The mini burger is ONLY offered with the tea set, at least it wasn’t on the menu.

This Burger was EXTREMELY good though. It actually tasted healthy in a really good sort of way. Now when I say it tastes healthy I am comparing it to other burgers, not vegetables or some other actually healthy food.

The reason for the healthy taste, if you want to call it that, is that the beef patty has VERY little fat in it. I really, really, really loved this burger. If you are more into burgers than me I would definitely recommend trying one of their larger burgers. But for those of us that just want a taste the mini-burger tea set is just fine. You get a REALLY good burger, without the guilt associated with eating 1000 calories or more of heart attack inducing goodness!

In case you are thinking of going there the Burger Room is located at:

G/F, 7 Caroline Hill Road
Causeway Bay, Hong Kong

For those of you not used to Hong Kong addresses, the G/F just means it’s on the ground floor.

Skyline

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

So we just saw Skyline today. You know, this movie:

skylineposter

I think I would give this movie an F+, if there were such a grade, for the first 88 minutes out of the 92 minute length of this turd of a movie.

I knew what I was getting into as soon as I saw Eric Balfour in the previews.  I knew it was going to be one of those Sci-Fi B movies that show up on the Syfy Channel in the middle of the day on Saturday. I’m sure Eric Balfour is a great guy, but I have never seen him outside of Syfy Channel’s more cheesy movies.

Crystal wanted to see a movie, and this was the only US movie showing here, in Hong Kong, that we haven’t seen yet. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part: 1 comes out December 16th and Megamind comes out on the most important day of the year, December 23rd (My Birthday). Yes, make a note of it.

I will say that although this movie gets an F+ it is definitely much better than the movies that form my personal trio of death. These movies are:

  1. In The Mix
  2. Ultraviolet
  3. The Little Black Book

While those three movies get an F-, Skyline, minutes 0 to 88, gets an F+. The movie suffered from six problems:

  1. Horrible storyline
  2. Stagnant plot (like NOTHING happened for the first 80 minutes)
  3. Horrible acting
  4. it had me thinking of a mash-up of Independence Day, Cloverfield, Kai from Lexx, and some mid 20th century brain snatchers movie.
    1. some have said they saw district 9 in it too, I didn’t.
  5. Zero big name actors
  6. should have been straight to DVD or a Syfy channel Saturday midday movie.

Now the first 88 minutes does have one thing going for it

  1. The special effects, with the exception of one brief part, were pretty bad ass

Yeah just one good thing about the movie. And the best special effects in the movie were all shown in the previews. But now to minutes  89 to 92.

As the pointless movie was coming to an end I started to wonder, what is going to happen here? Are the humans going to win? is some other alien force going to come and bring fiery judgment down upon the evil aliens’ heads? will the military try and nuke the crap out of them again? (Yes they nuked Los Angeles during the movie.)

No none of that. really that last 4 minutes of the movie totally changed it for me. It was sublime I didn’t really see it coming. I knew something was going to happen with the character but I couldn’t have imagined what they thought up. And then the stills right before the credits were pretty amazing. Truly, the last 4 minutes were amazing. But the rest of the movie is an ABSOLUTE turd.

Although, in my humble opinion, the last 4 minutes were pretty amazing, I think you should just watch it on Netflix. It’s going to be one of those movies that goes straight to online streaming. You won’t even have to wait for the DVD to get mailed to you.
